Where the term comes from
The word sounds like an upgrade charge, but it points at something real. The difference is between drawing around a house and lighting its parts. One treats the house as a shape. The other treats it as a building with peaks, recesses, columns and texture.None of that requires an architect or a vocabulary test. The useful test is whether the design explains itself. If the answer is specific to your house, there is a design behind it. If it is about the hardware, you are being sold a package.
Which features carry the design
Every building gives you something to work with. Peaks, posts, dormers, a material change, a porch under a roof. Those are the anchors, and the rest of the plan supports them.
Why lighting everything is a mistake
The instinct is to add light until nothing is dark. That is where plans go wrong. Buildings look best when some of them stay dark, because contrast is what creates depth. Even coverage removes the depth, which is the opposite of what anybody wanted.A building lit this way looks different from one that has been outlined, and the difference is visible from the road even to people who could not say what changed.
Two versions of the same idea
On a house, architectural lighting is usually about how the front reads from the street. On a commercial building, there is a business reason attached: it needs to be found, and it needs to read as in business. Company colors on a building are readable at distances a sign is not.

The techniques, translated
There are a few basic approaches. Washing means even light across a surface, good for large simple areas. Grazing means light skimming close along a surface so texture shows, which is why masonry gets grazed rather than washed. Uplighting comes from below, which suits vertical features and little else.
Color temperature is a design choice
There is a range of whites, and the material decides. Warm reads comfortable, and it agrees with brick and timber. Cooler sharpens a modern facade, and a little goes a long way. Mixing them on one building is the mistake to avoid.
